Ash Wednesday, February 10th
This coming Wednesday, February 10th, is the beginning of the Season of Lent. While Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, many Catholics like to begin Lent by participating in Mass and receiving the sign of blest ashes on their foreheads. Masses with the Blessing and Distribution of Ashes* are scheduled for 6:30, 8:30 and 10:00AM as well as 6:00PM. The 10AM Mass will include the students and faculty of St. Theresa Catholic School. (*Please note: Ashes are distributed outside of Mass only to the hospitalized and homebound).
Fast and Abstinence: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Roman Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
